The School Curriculum
We try to maintain a delicate balance in our curriculum between ensuring rigour and coverage of subjects and enhancing and enriching the experiences the children have at Ravendale. We want every day to be memorable and hope the children leave the school, at the end of the day, equally excited and exhausted. Excited by learning, exhausted by learning.
To teacher reading and writing in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 we use a scheme called Read Write Inc. This has proven very successful with our Year One phonics screening pass mark always significantly above the national average.
For maths in Years 1 to 6 we use a scheme based on the Singapore curriculum.
In English (once the children leave Read Write Inc) we use a scheme called literacy and language to base what we teach on (the learning objectives) but often use novel study to actually teach the objectives. For example the Year 5 and 6 children have recently based their lessons on The Sword in the Stone, while the Year 3 and 4 are studying Esio Trot.
Each week the class teacher has an hour away from class to discuss children's learning with children. This is a really powerful tool in promoting metacognition (or learning how to learn).
Finally, we have teaching assistants who will either pre-teach a topic or help consolidate understanding if a child is struggling with their learning.
